Frequently asked questions about Musseltone®

Biolane® is a unique extract made from fresh New Zealand green-lipped mussels (Perna canaliculus). Biolane® is completely natural, and has been shown to be effective for arthritis and joint health. Biolane® extract is used in Musseltone™ joint health formula.

What makes Musseltone® unique?

Musseltone® is unique because of its manufacturing process. The mussels are harvested and processed without any heat or chemicals. The fresh live mussels are crushed and the soft flesh extracted. This preserves the factors that make Musseltone® so therapeutic.

This process is done within 24 hours of the mussels being harvested, so they are at the peak of freshness. Biolane®takes complete control of all of the manufacturing processes, monitoring every step to ensure all of the unique extracts are retained. Mussels are harvested at specific times of the year to ensure that the mussels are at their optimum level when processed.

The compounds that would normally be destroyed or altered by heat but are retained in Biolane™ extract, include:

Could I get the same benefits from eating fresh mussels?

While eating fresh mussels is a delicious way to get many nutrients, the cooking process destroys the beneficial compounds (listed above). To get the benefit of one Musseltone® capsule, you would need to eat six large raw mussels directly from the sea. Biolane® mussels are specially grown, harvested and manufactured for these therapeutic compounds, and the benefits are supported by over 30 years of clinical research.  

Where do mussels come from?

The green -lipped mussels used in Musseltone® are native to New Zealand, and don’t grow anywhere else in the world. They are farmed in open coastal waters of New Zealand so that they grow in their natural environment. They are also sustainably sourced, as they grow on ropes in farms so natural mussel beds are not depleted.

Precautions and Contra-Indications

Some people should avoid using Musseltone®. These include:

• People with gout
• People with seafood allergies
• People on a total salt-free diet (Biolane® contains natural marine minerals)
• Children

Customers taking prescription medication, including Warfarin or other blood thinning medication, should consult their Health Practitioner before using this product. Some people(1-2%) may get a flare up of symptoms for a few days before they notice benefit.
