Precautions and contra-indications
-
When taking Fosamax (Alendronate) and other bisphosphonate drugs, Oroxine (Levothyroxine) or tetracycline antibiotics (eg Minomycin, Doxycycline), Calcium supplements should be taken at least 2 hours apart from these other medicines because these may form insoluble Calcium complexes and inhibit absorption of both drug and Calcium.
-
Because Iron absorption is impaired by Calcium Iron supplements should be taken at least 1 hour before or after taking Calcium.
Frequently asked questions
Q What is the recommended daily intake of Calcium?
A Calcium is essential for building denser, stronger bones in early life and for slowing the rate of bone loss in later life. It also helps to regulate your heartbeat, sends nerve impulses, helps blood clotting function, assists in muscle contraction, stimulates hormone secretions and activates enzymes. Getting enough Calcium whether through your diet or supplements is essential to maintaining bone strength. Current research indicates many women do not consume enough Calcium in their diets.
Q What can impair Calcium absorption?
A Certain compounds can impair the absorption of Calcium absorption including oxalates, phytates, protein, caffeine and sodium. Foods high in oxalates include spinach, rhubarb, beet greens and almonds.
Q Who is most at risk of developing brittle bones?
A It is vitally important to maintain our bone density as we age. Strong healthy bones are essential for an active lifestyle, and if our bones don't receive the right nutrients, and in the amounts needed over time, osteoporosis (porous or brittle bones) may develop.
Risk factors for osteoporosis include:
- Women (especially of small stature)
- Family history of osteoporosis
- Advanced age
- Vitamin D deficiency
- Excessive intake of alcohol or coffee
- Post menopausal women
- Low calcium intake
- Cigarette smoking
Q Which type of calcium should I take?
A There are many different forms of calcium and some forms are more absorbable than others. Calcium citrate and hydroxyapatite are well absorbed forms of calcium. It is also important to remember your body also requires other nutrients in order to properly absorb and utilise calcium. Vitamin D is needed by the body to absorb calcium, however recent studies indicate we are deficient in this important sunshine vitamin.
